Vitamin C vs. Ascorbic Acid Virtually all vitamin C supplements are actually ascorbic acid (from high fructose corn syrup, corn etc.), potassium ascorbate, magnesium ascorbate and/or calcium ascorbate. These laboratory produced products are not natural vitamin C. They are chemically synthesized molecules and are often made again from genetically modified (GMO) corn sugar.
Ascorbic acid is not Food Grade Vitamin C, however, we can have limited benefits, as others have by ascorbic acid. This investigation is to give us an honest perspective of where our vitamin and minerals are coming from.
"It is worthwhile to take pure crystalline ascorbic acid. It is made from glucose (corn sugar). What is called rose hips vitamin C is same pure crystalline ascorbic acid with a pinch of rose hips powder added. It is almost impossible to buy ascorbic acid from a natural source. The rose hip and aserolebarus ascorbic acid is out of the same barrel from Hoffman-LaRoche, as the others, but with a pinch of rose hip powder.”
Today, the majority of people in the civilized world are becoming victims of degenerative disease resulting from the chronic poisoning and malnutrition. Even though well fed, they are starving to death for the most essential micronutrients. To administer a counterfeit when they cry for bread is to HAND THEM A STONE.
I realized that Over 90% of ascorbic acid was (and still is) manufactured in Nutley, New Jersey, owned by Hoffman-LaRoche, one of the world’s LARGEST drug manufacturers and recently sold to DSM after they where sued for 500 million dollars for world wide vitamin price fixing.
Founded in 1896 by Fritz Hoffmann-La Roche, the company was early on known for producing various vitamin preparations and derivatives. In 1934, it became the first company to mass-produce synthetic vitamin C, under the brand name Redoxon.
My dear friends, we have been led to believe and marketed that ascorbic acid is vitamin C fueling the drug companies (OUCH). Its time we stop the abuse and take back our freedom of knowledge and lets get back to real food nutrition.
(If we truly want to contemplate this, they are manufacturing most of the vitamin and mineral supplements in most of our health food stores. – Down right frightening) - Just though you should now.
According the them, ascorbic acid is made from a process involving cornstarch (GMO Corn – High fructose corn syrup) and volatile acids. Each company that buys the bulk synthetic ascorbic acid then makes its own labels, its own claims, and its own formulations, each one claiming to have the superior form of vitamin C, even though (90%) came from the same place. THIS IS NOT VITAMIN C.
Early research use food grade vitamin C, discovered by Szent-Gyorgyi
Dr. Royal Lee was the pioneer researcher in the field of whole food vitamins. For decades he documented the basic facts summarized in this chapter. His work has never been scientifically refuted. Anyone who seriously undertakes the study of vitamins today corroborates Lee’s work.
In his writings, Dr. Lee says that “…synthetic vitamins seem to be dangerous. Irradiated Ergosterol (D) the first synthetic vitamin to be widely marketed, is now known to be extremely dangerous. It has fatally poisoned children in doses smaller than those recommended for treatment of rickets.” (JAMA, p. 1209, 4/26).
Szent-Georgi discovered vitamin C in 1937. In all his research however, Szent-Georgi found that he could never cure scurvy with the isolated ascorbic acid itself.
Ascorbic acid simply cannot confer vitamin activity, as taught by the discoverer of vitamin C himself, another Nobel Prize laureate, Dr. Albert Szent-Georgi.
Realizing that he could always cure scurvy with the “impure” vitamin C found in simple foods, Szent-Georgi discovered that other factors had to be at work in order for vitamin activity to take place. So he returned to the laboratory and eventually made the discovery of another member of the vitamin C complex, as shown in the diagram above: rutin. All the factors in the complex, as Royal Lee and Dr. Szent-Georgi both came to understand, ascorbic acid, rutin, and the other factors, were synergists: co-factors which together sparked the “functional interdependence of biologically related nutrient factors.” (Empty Harvest p120)
Other Interesting Research On Fake Vitamins
Natural vitamin A and beta carotene are well known as immune boosters and cancer fighters, in their role as antioxidants. Synthetic vitamin A by contrast has actually brought about significant increases in cancer. The same Finnish study we saw above provided smokers with large doses of synthetic beta carotene. Lung cancer incidence increased 18%! (NEJM Apr 94 “The Alpha Tocopherol Beta Carotene Cancer Prevention Study Group”)
These findings were corroborated two years later in another study written up in Lancet. Pharmacologic doses of synthetic beta carotenes were found to block the antioxidant activity of the other 50 naturally occurring carotenoids in the diet. Anti-cancer activity was thus blocked by the synthetic. (Lancet 1996)
With the vast outpouring of wrong information about vitamins A and C, the findings of a 1991 article in Health Counselor are no surprise: 50% of Americans are deficient in vitamin A and 41% are deficient in vitamin C.
